What is Methadone?

Methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain and opioid addiction. When used to treat severe pain, methadone is available as a tablet or oral solution.

How Does Methadone Work?

When taken as prescribed by a licensed healthcare professional, methadone helps patients function physically, emotionally and intellectually without impairment. Methadone helps individuals recover from their addiction and reclaim their lives. When used to treat opioid addiction, methadone usually comes in the form of a fruit-flavored drink. The powder is dissolved and taken orally once a day.

  1. The proper dose of methadone allows patients to lead a normal life without making them feel “high” or “drugged.”
  2. Methadone has a gradual, long-lasting effect of 24-hours or more, which mitigates any craving for other opioid drugs.
  3. Methadone is taken orally once per day, so there is no need for injection needles and their risk of diseases like hepatitis or HIV.

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone is the brand name for a prescription medication used in treating those addicted to opioids, illegal or prescription. It contains the ingredients buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, blocks the opiate receptors and reduces a person’s urges. The second ingredient, naloxone, helps reverse the effects of opioids. Together, these drugs work to prevent withdrawal symptoms associated with an opioid addiction.

How does Suboxone Work?

Suboxone can be used during different stages of treatment and offers a long-term solution for managing an opioid addiction. When included as part of a comprehensive recovery plan, the medication eliminates opioid cravings altogether. Since Suboxone is a depressant, it slows you down rather than speeding you up like a stimulant. Those who take the medication may experience:

  • Pain relief
  • Calmness and overall well-being
  • Perceived fewer worries and reduced stress levels
  • Relaxation
