In March 2018, Canada’s federal health minister announced new regulatory measures to make methadone more accessible for patients living with opioid addiction. Methadone is a medication used to reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms, a treatment known as opioid agonist therapy. While rates of opioid overdose deaths are on the rise nationwide, methadone prescriptions have also rapidly increased.
The expansion of methadone access is welcome news for frontline practitioners hoping to lessen some of the harms associated with opioid addiction. The changes make it easier for patients to access methadone directly from their primary care physician, reducing barriers to treatment for chronic drug users.
The new measures allow healthcare practitioners to prescribe and administer methadone outside of a hospital setting and without having to get a federal exemption. As a result, Canadians may see a noticeable increase in safe injection sites and private, for-profit methadone clinics as corporations endeavour to capitalize on the methadone market.
