August 13, 2019Beginning September 2011, community pharmacists have been funded by the Ontario Government for administering a smoking cessation program to Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) recipients. As trusted wellness advisors, pharmacists are available to support patients who want to stop smoking.
Pharmacists work with patients to develop a smoking cessation strategy and provide one to one support services which include a readiness assessment, a first consultation and follow-up counselling sessions for the period of one year. The pharmacist helps to facilitate access to stop smoking aids and prescription therapy where appropriate.
Benefits
- Raise awareness of smoking cessation options
- Improve the quality of life for patients who quit smoking
- Better access to health care providers and services
- Stronger partnerships between community health services
- Reduced number of smoking-related adverse drug events and hospital admissions
